  Jojo Ungson's Battle with Cancer
It is sad to hear that one of our batchmates, Jojo Ungson has been diagnosed with lung cancer and he is a non-smoker. Philip F. was the first person to inform me about this through his officemate who happens to be a relative of Jojo. To get a first hand confirmation, Philip gave me the contact numbers of Jojo Monday night. The next day, I was talking already to Juliet, the wife of Jojo and confirmed his condition. Dr. Ben R., Atty. Aids L. and myself went to FEU hospital later in the afternoon and visited Jojo and to find out more with our long lost friend. We all remember him as the big guy and the son of our beloved elementary teacher. Raul is even more creative and Jojo was pictured as the alter ego of "Shaq" in the look-alikes section.

But the 220-lb body frame has been reduced to 60 lbs. He had undergone chemotherapy but his body was not able to cope with the treatment. They are planning to transfer Jojo to PGH to cut costs as expenses are draining their savings. Jojo works with SSS as a contractual clerk and got married only recently. He has a 2-month old daughter and his wife Juliet is an employee of a bank. How we wish we could do more to alleviate the condition of Jojo. For the meantime, we would like to enjoin all batchmates and friends to say a prayer for his recovery and ease the pain he is undergoing. The power of prayer brings miracles. And miracles do happen!!!

I have just talked to Glenn Rosales regarding Jojo Ungson's present situation after learning that he was transferred to ICU and eventually to PGH.

Glenn is suggesting that, if possible, can we, the LSQC BATCH 82, hear a mass for Jojo in Our very own Lourdes Church, instead of all of us visiting him altogether. We might as well proceed to a simple get together in one of the high school rooms as we did last May 19.

It would also be a good idea if we invite some of our former teachers from elementary and high school.

We would appreciate volunteers for arranging this particular event hopefully within this month.

Let us all say a prayer for our ailing brother...

Pax.

Hey Guys,

I am volunteering for this job... I'll make the arrangements with Lourdes Church... But I'll need to know how many will attend the Mass.

May I also suggest two (2) things: First, that we hold this mass on August 17 (before our meeting) / Second, that Fr. Tranqui Santos, Jr. be our priest... I'll need your feedback on both suggestions and I may also need your help in finding Fr. Tranqui (that is if you agree with my 2nd suggestion).

For Jojo: I don't know if this will reach you... I certainly hope it does... We're all praying for you bro... Sabi ni George na "Miracles still happen"... I believe that they do... but I think that the biggest miracle would be that we all view the inevitable as a good thing since this our chance to meet God... I also pray that all of us face this event with the dignity we were born with as Christians... May you and your family see tha goodness of God in this event... never stop praying bro... GOD LOVES YOU... BELIEVE!!!

Mga batchmates,

To those interested, please get in touch with Philip F. I believe he is coordinating a visit to Jojo this Saturday afternoon. This is one GREAT opportunity to support a batchmate. Simulan natin sa presence natin just to cheer up Jojo maski konti. Then I hope we could have a project for him or his child. Philip, ito na siguro yung sinasabi mong look inwards first para makatulong sa kabatch (meeting sa place ni George, remember?). Scholarship for the child? Maybe...

Cancer causes pain, really severe pain, and the pain it brings is not only physical, but also emotional — more so, I guess, in the condition of Jojo Ungson, who has a baby. My profession entails the alleviation of pain so yes, prayers may ease the spiritual pain, a visit, or passing the hat may also minimize the emotional (& financial) pain, and for the physical pain, can someone inform us what are some of the medicines Jojo needs, for kahit konti mabigay or maitulong physically — at least, may nagawa, and na-improve kahit paano ang quality of life nung tao. In his condition, sad to say, medyo palliative na lang, but doing what we can do to ease the pain matters. So physician-batchmates, if a list comes out of some meds Jojo may need, baka pwede nating i-denggoy yung mga meds for him. I, for one, will save my IV analgesics for Jojo. Saan/sino ang holding center/contact person dito?

My fellow Lourdesians,

Jojo Ungson passed away last Friday, August 10, due to lung cancer. Interment will be held on August 14 at the Holy Cross Memorial right after the 8:00 pm mass.

Let us all offer a prayer to him & his family.

Hi Lourdesians,

it is clear that we can not do anything anymore but to pray and remember the good times with Jojo. i suggest to say the "Prayer of Saint Francis" at a particular date and time, so that we, who are in overseas could be as "one" with you guys while saying the prayer...

a simple thing to do, but i guess Jojo will appreciate it!

Fellow Lourdesians,

Last Saturday night, Aug. 11, we paid our respects to Jojo Ungson who lies in state at the church of the Sacred Heart Subdivision which is located just past SM Fairview.

In attendance were George E., Philip F. and wife Shirley, Joseph L., Jonas, Glenn, Raul C., Ben R., Gary P., Tommy, Roy F., Jun M., Mon C., Boom and myself. We passed the hat and came up with P6,000 abuloy.

Jojo's widow, Juliet showed us their wedding album, honeymoon at Boracay pics and the baby album of their 3 month old Therese Marie.

Afterwards, at the Sangkalan Grill, plans were hatched to possibly adopt Jojo's daughter as a scholar in our planned scholarship program. We all agreed that this is one good thing that has come out of our efforts to reunite with our batchmates in preparation for our 20th year homecoming on February 2002.

Jojo will be buried on Tuesday at Holy Cross Memorial Park on Tuesday, Aug. 14, after the 8:00 mass.

If you can make it please coordinate with George or me so we can lay Jojo to his final resting place.

Everyone - please say a prayer for Jojo at 8:00 am tom., Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Pax,
Adrian
