We are the Champions, my friend!

LSM SOL 2002 grabs the Division 1 title; LSQC St. Dominic90 wins Division 2!

MANDALUYONG City.  The quest is over!  Only two teams raised the trophy of a winner the chalice of victory the 1st PADRE PIO PERPETUAL CUP last April 1, Saturday here at the LSM Gymnasium.

Let us review first this conferences format
SOLGG Basketball Tournament featuring PADRE PIO PERPETUAL CUP
The teams goal of this tournament is to obtain the Perpetual Cup per division. The winning team shall have the said trophy displayed in their alumni association office while the team shall receive a replica of the trophy.  The trophy shall reside permanently in the alumni association office once a group has won three years consecutively.

The Most Valuable Player shall be from the champion team per division of the tournament.  The MVPs shall be based upon statistics points of the crossover semi-finals (60%) and sportsmanship (40%).

Well, the first game went through a dozen of lead changes.  Both teams were apparently careful in their offensive plays displayed team plays as well as individual basketball skills. Team St. Dominic90 lost twice to St. Lawrence92 the elimination round 78-82 last January 7, 2006 and 83-88 Game 3 of their semifinals encounter last March 25, 2006.

St. Dominic90 came prepared to play with a basketball-focused payback time against Team St. Lawrence92.   St. Dominic90 applied 3 to 5 kinds of defense and employed with their hearts out a full court press in the final quarter to win 80-72 as Division 2 champions.

Gerald Cabaluna (#8) of St. Dominic90 won the Division 2 MVP race.  He averaged 29 points per game (ppg) in the semifinals and ended the finals with 27 markers contributed to his winning team.  He outclassed St. Lawrence92s Chestnut Almario (#8) who was averaging 23.3ppg in the semifinals.  Almario had a snag in his offensive efforts and  managed to deliver 7 points for his team.

Awarding the MVP trophy was LSQCAAI Executive Director Mon Cabigao79 while presenting the championship trophy was incoming LSQCAAI President George Escarraga82.

Meanwhile, watching the Division 1 games was reasonably energetic, fast paced and with a never-say-die attitude.  SOL 2002 lost to SOL 2000 last January 21, 2006 elimination round meeting, 71-84 and got even with the same team 87-81 in their semifinals game last March 25, 2006.

SOL 2002 was leading up to the third quarter of the game.  SOL 2000 tasted the lead at 56-55 at the final quarter, and then had lead changes before a first deadlock at 61-all.   There was an exchange of steals by SOL 2002 Egonia #12 and blocks by SOL 2000 Earnshaw #3, 19.3ppg in the final 4 minutes of the game.

After five more deadlocks at 63-all, 65-all, 68-all, 70-all, 72-all Fargas SOL 2002 #1, 18ppg split his charities to make it 73-72.  A foul on R. Egonia sent him to the free throw line afterward he made sure that he converted both charities 75-72.

In the ensuing play, on the dying seconds, M. Martires SOL 2000 #14, 18ppg tried to tie the score with a 3-point shot but muffed it.   SOL 2002 replicated a victory over SOL 2000 to become Division 1 champions.

Ralph Lawrence Egonia (#12) of Team SOL 2002 won the Division 1 MVP race.  He averaged 22 points per game in the semifinals.

Giving away the MVP and championship trophies was SOLGG Basketball Mandaluyongs Commissioner Henry Subido.

Now there are two teams, one in each division of the SOLGG Basketball that is now in the Lourdes School alumni sports history!  Congratulations Winners!!

Pax et Bonum!

On to the Finals!

QUEZON City.  The Sons Of Lourdes Goodwill Games QC hosted the final game of the crossover semifinals for both SOLGG Basketball Divisions 1 & 2s quest of the 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.

After a technical foul for delaying the beginning of their game, SOL 1995 after taking the lead never looked back.  Team SOL 1993 had 9/14 conversions at the 3-point arc but SOL 1995 had more than 25 points of fast break plays and gathered 113 points to put away Team SOL 1993 at bay with 94.

Division 1 finals qualifiers SOL2002 and SOL2000 though there was no pressure on both teams they played best showing us a foretaste for their sudden death championships.  SOL 2002 wins and scores 87-81.

Team St. Lawrence92s win over St. Dominic90 fashioned a 3-way tie with SOL 1995 in the Division 2s quest for the finals slot.  Both St. Lawrence92 and St. Dominic90 have higher quotients, which made them eligible to meet each other for the basketball challenge on April 1st.  Heres why

Twas a MANDA Day!

Mandaluyong City.  The SOLGG Mandaluyong hosted Game 2 of the crossover semifinals for both SOLGG Basketball Divisions 1 & 2s quest of the 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.

Sad to note that three out of fours teams from LSQC came in minutes before game time; unable to make time to adjust to the environment, feel the court, and the basketball here at the Lourdes School Mandaluyong (LSM) Gymnasium.

Team St. Bernard-Primex02 had a lot of costly passing errors and poor throw shooting throughout the game with excessive 19 turnovers. The depth in bench was absent as Badillo (#10) and Ortiz (#17) almost played without relief. Two technical fouls were slapped to the team in the fourth quarter was untimely which one-way or another spelled the teams defeat to Team SOL2000.

Team St. Dominic90 danced their way to a victory against SOL1993 scoring 102-72.  Earlier, there was a quarrel between E. Monsod (#18 SOL1993) and J. Aquino (#4 St. Dominic) and the latter received a technical foul.  To pacify this incident in the second quarter, both players were benched for 5-minutes.  The game carried on as if nothing happened and later both guys exchanged a handshake after the game.

Meanwhile, Team St. James89 showed up with six men, most of them playing without relief; dominated both offensive and defensive rebounds and were on top by three points 69-63 at the end of the third quarter still ended up losing as Team SOL 2002 found their 3-point guns firing in the final quarter.

As both teams were exchanging baskets and St. James89 up by two 82-80, Ralph Egonias (#12) shot from 3-point arc broke the defensive backs of St. James89 and sparked SOL 2002s final offensive.

With less than a minute left in the final quarter, Robbie Ang (#12 SOL1995) made sure both of his free throws went in after a foul was made on him score 92-90.  In the next play, Chestnut Almario (#8 St. Lawrence92) scored on a bank shot jumper on the left side of the court to make the count 92-all.

A technical foul was slapped on Ang with 24.4 ticks left in the final quarter.  Ian Bravo (#34 St. Lawrence92) designated shooter converted one of two free throws to take the lead for the first time at 93-92.  St. Lawrence put up a good defense but EJ Fuentes (#21) was able to break the said defense for a lone lay-up to take the lead again by one 94-93.

A costly error by J. Cura (#6) at the inbound lane as EJ Fuentes was able to intercept the ball and an immediate foul on Fuentes.  St. Lawrence92 was in penalty situation; Fuentes made one free throw to score 95-93 with 16.2 seconds left.

In the ensuing play, Joby Lopez (#11 SOL1995) almost intercepted the ball from a pass by R. Bathan (#14) to Bravo to trigger a loose ball as they were hustling the ball went out of bounds the referee called last touch St. Lawrence92 with 3.5 seconds left.

No time outs for both teams.  St. Lawrence92 set up an immediate defense except for the getaway lay-up by Matley Reyes (#9) to finalize the score 97-93.

SOLGG Basketballs Game 3 of the crossover semifinals goes back to Lourdes School of Quezon City Gymnasium on March 25, 2pm.

The Scores:
Game 1:  SOL 2000   96 Earnshaw 24, Martires 19, Fuentes 17, Malicdem 14, Icarangal 7, Del Rosario 6, Sausa 3, Arcilla 2, Marcelo 2, Talampas 2.

The Quest for the Chalice of Victory

QUEZON CITY.  After the unveiling of the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketballs new segment of progression the Crossover Semifinals between Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) and Lourdes School of Quezon City (LSQC) last March 11 at the LSQC Grade School Gymnasium, the pursuit for the trophy of a champion continues...

The announcement of Game 1 of the semifinals for that day where as follows
Game 1 St. Dominic90 vs. SOL 1995
Game 2 SOL 2002 vs. St. Bernard-Primex02
Game 3 St. Lawrence92 vs. SOL 1993
Game 4 SOL 2000 vs. St. James89

St. Dominic90 restrained a 5-man Team SOL 1995, yes undermanned but yet a fighting unit.  Team SOL 1995 lead at halftime 36-33, still asserted themselves in the game, doing all that they could other than being substituted for a breather.  Ian Cantor (#1) led his teammates with 26 points while St. Dominic90s Herrera (#5) and Cabaluna (#8) had 24 and 22 points each.

A dismal 8-point production in the final canto spelled the defeat of Team St. Bernard-Primex02 to SOL 2002.  Maybe another reason was playing injured is T. Ortiz (#17) but he still managed to scatter 30 points along with Badillo (#10) who had 21.  Team SOL 2002 bombarded four 3-point markers in the final half to win game one 83-68.  Fargas (#1) lead his team with 23 points.

After trailing 16-26 in the first quarter, SOL 1993 played catch up in the next quarters of the game against St. Lawrence92.  Antonio (#12) of SOL 1993 led all scorers this day with 32 points and Estacio (#9) added 18 points.  St. Lawrence92 raised a 20-point bubble ending the third quarter whilst its four men scored more than 15 points each to put SOL 1993 at bay.

Meanwhile in the final game, the timely shots at the 3-point arc by SOL 2000s Martires (#14) and his teams effective collective defense to move the big men of St, James89 out of the shaded area was enough to snatch an 84-73 win.  Martires (#14) ended the game with 25 points (five 3-point shots) and Earnshaw (#3) supporting with 23 points.

We will transfer to Lourdes School of Mandaluyong Gymnasium at Shaw Boulevard for the resumption of Game 2 SOLGG Basketball Crossover Semifinals.  See you there.

Pax Et Bonum.

The Quarterscores:
Game 1: 14-8, 33-36, 65-57, 88-71
Game 2: 19-22, 40-41, 65-60, 83-68
Game 3: 26-16, 37-32, 65-45, 85-73

Unfolding Sports History

QUEZON CITY.  Last March 11 the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketball unveiled a new segment in its progression the crossover semifinals between Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) and Lourdes School of Quezon City (LSQC).

At around 1:10pm, Joey Abarquez QC82 steered the team to their formation.  Afterwards, the parade of our semifinalists and their introductions began.  At the same time Atty. Joseph Literal QC82 suited up as our photographer.

SOLGG founder and Tournament Director Erwin Paz82 took control of the sound system to have an ala-NBA music background for the event while due to the absence of a Master of Ceremonies, SOLGG founder and Technical Director Jojo Angus QC82 played as host.

As the teams took their places on the hard court, the mini-ceremonial got underway.

Our LSQC Rector Rev. Fr. Cesar Acuin, OFM Cap was introduced and led the alumni players, guest and visitors in a thanksgiving prayer and the SOL Alumni Prayer (at play).

Before Jojo presented the next guest, he read a drawn out introduction and welcomed San Miguel Beerman point guard Olsen Racela.  Olsen made a short speech though he never donned the LSQC uniform he was thankful because it was in the LSQC Basketball Elementary Intramurals as part of team 4-Halcon where he started his basketball career.  He led the alumni basketball players reciting the Oath of Sportsmanship.

Erwin Paz QC82 and SOLGG founder/director Mane Fernandez SOL80 presented a token of appreciation to Olsen a #17 SOLGG jersey.  (Maraming salamat sa mga kaibigan natin sa LSQC Batch87!)

Next everybody sang the Lourdes Forever (Jojo led the minus-one singing!  Hehehe)

For the official opening remarks, incoming LSQCAAI President George Escarraga QC82 has this to say
A few months back, SOLGG is only a vision.
Today, SOLGG is a reality.
Tomorrow, SOLGG will be part of history.
Let us now unfold history.  Let the games begin!

Our guests, Rev. Fr. Cesar Acuin and Olsen Racela completed the event with the Ceremonial Tossing of the basketball before game 1.

Salamat sa Victory Bottled Water ni LSQCAA Executive Director Mon Cabigao79! Salamat po sa mga dumalo!
