We are the Champions, my friend!

LSM SOL 2002 grabs the Division 1 title; LSQC St. Dominic90 wins Division 2!

MANDALUYONG City.  The quest is over!  Only two teams raised the trophy of a winner the chalice of victory the 1st PADRE PIO PERPETUAL CUP last April 1, Saturday here at the LSM Gymnasium.

Let us review first this conferences format
SOLGG Basketball Tournament featuring PADRE PIO PERPETUAL CUP
The teams goal of this tournament is to obtain the Perpetual Cup per division. The winning team shall have the said trophy displayed in their alumni association office while the team shall receive a replica of the trophy.  The trophy shall reside permanently in the alumni association office once a group has won three years consecutively.

The Most Valuable Player shall be from the champion team per division of the tournament.  The MVPs shall be based upon statistics points of the crossover semi-finals (60%) and sportsmanship (40%).

Well, the first game went through a dozen of lead changes.  Both teams were apparently careful in their offensive plays displayed team plays as well as individual basketball skills. Team St. Dominic90 lost twice to St. Lawrence92 the elimination round 78-82 last January 7, 2006 and 83-88 Game 3 of their semifinals encounter last March 25, 2006.

St. Dominic90 came prepared to play with a basketball-focused payback time against Team St. Lawrence92.   St. Dominic90 applied 3 to 5 kinds of defense and employed with their hearts out a full court press in the final quarter to win 80-72 as Division 2 champions.

Gerald Cabaluna (#8) of St. Dominic90 won the Division 2 MVP race.  He averaged 29 points per game (ppg) in the semifinals and ended the finals with 27 markers contributed to his winning team.  He outclassed St. Lawrence92s Chestnut Almario (#8) who was averaging 23.3ppg in the semifinals.  Almario had a snag in his offensive efforts and  managed to deliver 7 points for his team.

Awarding the MVP trophy was LSQCAAI Executive Director Mon Cabigao79 while presenting the championship trophy was incoming LSQCAAI President George Escarraga82.

Meanwhile, watching the Division 1 games was reasonably energetic, fast paced and with a never-say-die attitude.  SOL 2002 lost to SOL 2000 last January 21, 2006 elimination round meeting, 71-84 and got even with the same team 87-81 in their semifinals game last March 25, 2006.

SOL 2002 was leading up to the third quarter of the game.  SOL 2000 tasted the lead at 56-55 at the final quarter, and then had lead changes before a first deadlock at 61-all.   There was an exchange of steals by SOL 2002 Egonia #12 and blocks by SOL 2000 Earnshaw #3, 19.3ppg in the final 4 minutes of the game.

After five more deadlocks at 63-all, 65-all, 68-all, 70-all, 72-all Fargas SOL 2002 #1, 18ppg split his charities to make it 73-72.  A foul on R. Egonia sent him to the free throw line afterward he made sure that he converted both charities 75-72.

In the ensuing play, on the dying seconds, M. Martires SOL 2000 #14, 18ppg tried to tie the score with a 3-point shot but muffed it.   SOL 2002 replicated a victory over SOL 2000 to become Division 1 champions.

Ralph Lawrence Egonia (#12) of Team SOL 2002 won the Division 1 MVP race.  He averaged 22 points per game in the semifinals.

Giving away the MVP and championship trophies was SOLGG Basketball Mandaluyongs Commissioner Henry Subido.

Now there are two teams, one in each division of the SOLGG Basketball that is now in the Lourdes School alumni sports history!  Congratulations Winners!!

Pax et Bonum!

On to the Finals!

QUEZON City.  The Sons Of Lourdes Goodwill Games QC hosted the final game of the crossover semifinals for both SOLGG Basketball Divisions 1 & 2s quest of the 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.

After a technical foul for delaying the beginning of their game, SOL 1995 after taking the lead never looked back.  Team SOL 1993 had 9/14 conversions at the 3-point arc but SOL 1995 had more than 25 points of fast break plays and gathered 113 points to put away Team SOL 1993 at bay with 94.

Division 1 finals qualifiers SOL2002 and SOL2000 though there was no pressure on both teams they played best showing us a foretaste for their sudden death championships.  SOL 2002 wins and scores 87-81.

Team St. Lawrence92s win over St. Dominic90 fashioned a 3-way tie with SOL 1995 in the Division 2s quest for the finals slot.  Both St. Lawrence92 and St. Dominic90 have higher quotients, which made them eligible to meet each other for the basketball challenge on April 1st.  Heres why

Twas a MANDA Day!

Mandaluyong City.  The SOLGG Mandaluyong hosted Game 2 of the crossover semifinals for both SOLGG Basketball Divisions 1 & 2s quest of the 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.

Sad to note that three out of fours teams from LSQC came in minutes before game time; unable to make time to adjust to the environment, feel the court, and the basketball here at the Lourdes School Mandaluyong (LSM) Gymnasium.

Team St. Bernard-Primex02 had a lot of costly passing errors and poor throw shooting throughout the game with excessive 19 turnovers. The depth in bench was absent as Badillo (#10) and Ortiz (#17) almost played without relief. Two technical fouls were slapped to the team in the fourth quarter was untimely which one-way or another spelled the teams defeat to Team SOL2000.

Team St. Dominic90 danced their way to a victory against SOL1993 scoring 102-72.  Earlier, there was a quarrel between E. Monsod (#18 SOL1993) and J. Aquino (#4 St. Dominic) and the latter received a technical foul.  To pacify this incident in the second quarter, both players were benched for 5-minutes.  The game carried on as if nothing happened and later both guys exchanged a handshake after the game.

Meanwhile, Team St. James89 showed up with six men, most of them playing without relief; dominated both offensive and defensive rebounds and were on top by three points 69-63 at the end of the third quarter still ended up losing as Team SOL 2002 found their 3-point guns firing in the final quarter.

As both teams were exchanging baskets and St. James89 up by two 82-80, Ralph Egonias (#12) shot from 3-point arc broke the defensive backs of St. James89 and sparked SOL 2002s final offensive.

With less than a minute left in the final quarter, Robbie Ang (#12 SOL1995) made sure both of his free throws went in after a foul was made on him score 92-90.  In the next play, Chestnut Almario (#8 St. Lawrence92) scored on a bank shot jumper on the left side of the court to make the count 92-all.

A technical foul was slapped on Ang with 24.4 ticks left in the final quarter.  Ian Bravo (#34 St. Lawrence92) designated shooter converted one of two free throws to take the lead for the first time at 93-92.  St. Lawrence put up a good defense but EJ Fuentes (#21) was able to break the said defense for a lone lay-up to take the lead again by one 94-93.

A costly error by J. Cura (#6) at the inbound lane as EJ Fuentes was able to intercept the ball and an immediate foul on Fuentes.  St. Lawrence92 was in penalty situation; Fuentes made one free throw to score 95-93 with 16.2 seconds left.

In the ensuing play, Joby Lopez (#11 SOL1995) almost intercepted the ball from a pass by R. Bathan (#14) to Bravo to trigger a loose ball as they were hustling the ball went out of bounds the referee called last touch St. Lawrence92 with 3.5 seconds left.

No time outs for both teams.  St. Lawrence92 set up an immediate defense except for the getaway lay-up by Matley Reyes (#9) to finalize the score 97-93.

SOLGG Basketballs Game 3 of the crossover semifinals goes back to Lourdes School of Quezon City Gymnasium on March 25, 2pm.

The Scores:
Game 1:  SOL 2000   96 Earnshaw 24, Martires 19, Fuentes 17, Malicdem 14, Icarangal 7, Del Rosario 6, Sausa 3, Arcilla 2, Marcelo 2, Talampas 2.

The Quest for the Chalice of Victory

QUEZON CITY.  After the unveiling of the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketballs new segment of progression the Crossover Semifinals between Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) and Lourdes School of Quezon City (LSQC) last March 11 at the LSQC Grade School Gymnasium, the pursuit for the trophy of a champion continues...

The announcement of Game 1 of the semifinals for that day where as follows
Game 1 St. Dominic90 vs. SOL 1995
Game 2 SOL 2002 vs. St. Bernard-Primex02
Game 3 St. Lawrence92 vs. SOL 1993
Game 4 SOL 2000 vs. St. James89

St. Dominic90 restrained a 5-man Team SOL 1995, yes undermanned but yet a fighting unit.  Team SOL 1995 lead at halftime 36-33, still asserted themselves in the game, doing all that they could other than being substituted for a breather.  Ian Cantor (#1) led his teammates with 26 points while St. Dominic90s Herrera (#5) and Cabaluna (#8) had 24 and 22 points each.

A dismal 8-point production in the final canto spelled the defeat of Team St. Bernard-Primex02 to SOL 2002.  Maybe another reason was playing injured is T. Ortiz (#17) but he still managed to scatter 30 points along with Badillo (#10) who had 21.  Team SOL 2002 bombarded four 3-point markers in the final half to win game one 83-68.  Fargas (#1) lead his team with 23 points.

After trailing 16-26 in the first quarter, SOL 1993 played catch up in the next quarters of the game against St. Lawrence92.  Antonio (#12) of SOL 1993 led all scorers this day with 32 points and Estacio (#9) added 18 points.  St. Lawrence92 raised a 20-point bubble ending the third quarter whilst its four men scored more than 15 points each to put SOL 1993 at bay.

Meanwhile in the final game, the timely shots at the 3-point arc by SOL 2000s Martires (#14) and his teams effective collective defense to move the big men of St, James89 out of the shaded area was enough to snatch an 84-73 win.  Martires (#14) ended the game with 25 points (five 3-point shots) and Earnshaw (#3) supporting with 23 points.

We will transfer to Lourdes School of Mandaluyong Gymnasium at Shaw Boulevard for the resumption of Game 2 SOLGG Basketball Crossover Semifinals.  See you there.

Pax Et Bonum.

The Quarterscores:
Game 1: 14-8, 33-36, 65-57, 88-71
Game 2: 19-22, 40-41, 65-60, 83-68
Game 3: 26-16, 37-32, 65-45, 85-73

Unfolding Sports History

QUEZON CITY.  Last March 11 the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketball unveiled a new segment in its progression the crossover semifinals between Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) and Lourdes School of Quezon City (LSQC).

At around 1:10pm, Joey Abarquez QC82 steered the team to their formation.  Afterwards, the parade of our semifinalists and their introductions began.  At the same time Atty. Joseph Literal QC82 suited up as our photographer.

SOLGG founder and Tournament Director Erwin Paz82 took control of the sound system to have an ala-NBA music background for the event while due to the absence of a Master of Ceremonies, SOLGG founder and Technical Director Jojo Angus QC82 played as host.

As the teams took their places on the hard court, the mini-ceremonial got underway.

Our LSQC Rector Rev. Fr. Cesar Acuin, OFM Cap was introduced and led the alumni players, guest and visitors in a thanksgiving prayer and the SOL Alumni Prayer (at play).

Before Jojo presented the next guest, he read a drawn out introduction and welcomed San Miguel Beerman point guard Olsen Racela.  Olsen made a short speech though he never donned the LSQC uniform he was thankful because it was in the LSQC Basketball Elementary Intramurals as part of team 4-Halcon where he started his basketball career.  He led the alumni basketball players reciting the Oath of Sportsmanship.

Erwin Paz QC82 and SOLGG founder/director Mane Fernandez SOL80 presented a token of appreciation to Olsen a #17 SOLGG jersey.  (Maraming salamat sa mga kaibigan natin sa LSQC Batch87!)

Next everybody sang the Lourdes Forever (Jojo led the minus-one singing!  Hehehe)

For the official opening remarks, incoming LSQCAAI President George Escarraga QC82 has this to say
A few months back, SOLGG is only a vision.
Today, SOLGG is a reality.
Tomorrow, SOLGG will be part of history.
Let us now unfold history.  Let the games begin!

Our guests, Rev. Fr. Cesar Acuin and Olsen Racela completed the event with the Ceremonial Tossing of the basketball before game 1.

Salamat sa Victory Bottled Water ni LSQCAA Executive Director Mon Cabigao79! Salamat po sa mga dumalo!

The Crossover Semifinals:

SOLGG Basketballs Final Four

QUEZON CITY.  The Sons Of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketball organizers are pleased to announce that they just concluded the Quarter Final Playoffs of the Padre Pio Perpetual Cup and went on to utilized the three-person officiating here at the LSQC Grade School Gym last Saturday.  It was a weekend of agitation, good teamwork and individual skill as well as on-the-court hostility by most of the quarterfinalist.

In game one, T. Rivera (#23) of St. James89 dished out a personal high of 43 points, F. Rivera (#28) with 25 and G. Ferreras (#4) with 20 to oust No.2 Div-1 St. Fidelis-Janphil97 118-91.  St. Fidelis-Janphil97 provided a fight even though they were in short supply of substitutes absent or sidelined with an injury.  Performing all out with little relief was De Guzman (#24) with 24 points while Tirona (#18) and Chua (#9) with 20 points apiece.

After winning five (5) straight games, Team St. Anthonys campaign for win No.6 at the quarterfinals to qualify for the crossover semifinals ended.  St. Dominic90 with five (5) of their players in double figures, leading scorer is G. Cabaluna (#8) with 30 points, applied their unrelenting full court press to purge Team St. Anthony87 99-79.

The second game had a high spot a three-point shot swooshed at approximately six (6) feet behind the mid-court line with 1.8 seconds in the first quarter by R. Cabaluna (#4) of St. Anthony87 and finished the game with 41 points.

In the next game, a clutch 11-foot jump shot at the right near the free throw line by R. Gaerlan (#8) triggered the start of Team St. Bernard-Primex02s comeback that outscored St. Pius00 25-17 in the third canto.

However, St. Bernard-Primex02 necessitated a 5-minutes to put a stop to the efforts of J. De Dios (#12) who scattered a personal and conference high of 48 points for Team St. Pius00.  With the game tied at 80-all less than thirty seconds remaining, N. Rampola (#6) missed a winning shot off an assist by De Dios.  After that, in an ensuing play a missed lay up by R. Badillo (#10) of St. Bernard-Primex02 before the time expired.

In the extension period, there were exchanges of baskets but C. Calaquians (#4) only score at the three-point arc ignited a rally for a total team scoring of 21 points for Team St. Bernard-Primex02 hence winning the game.  R. Badillo top scored a personal high 38 points and T. Ortiz (#17) pumped in 23 points.

Meanwhile, T. Abad (#5) seized the game with timely assists, plays and 19 points plus the midrange shots scored by A. Almario (#8) to produce 30 points for St. Lawrence92.  Team St. Lawrence92 surmounted the tough and persistent defense all throughout the game by Team St. Bernardine95.

Let us go over now to the General Rules & Regulations of the SOLGG Basketball

The teams goal of this tournament is to obtain the Perpetual Cup per division. The Quarter Finalists

Quezon City. We now have our quarterfinalists playing on March 4, Saturday at the LSQC Grade School Gym. Lets take a SOLGG -Basketball Rewind of games concerning the teams in this round.

Earlier games results:
January 14, 06 St. Fidelis-Janphil97 nipped St. James89, 74-70 (Division 1)

St. James89s #4 Ferreras (three 3-point bombers in the final canto ended with 22 points) and #28 F. Rivera (21 points) scoring efforts went for naught against St. Fidelis-Janphil97. The young-at-heart team in Division 1 slipped to a 1-2 win-loss card while St. Fidelis-JanPhil97 now 2-1 card, took advantage of St. James89s penalty situation in the final two minutes making 5 out of 6 attempts in the free throw line.

December 10, 05 St. Dominic90 whipped St. Anthony87, 76-74 (Division 2)

The second game ended with #16 of St. Dominic tipped in, after a miss field goal attempt to the basket, the winning shot in the last second while the game was tied 74-all. St. Anthony87 showed dismal performance during the tune up games but played basketball well against St. Dominic90. St. Dominc90 wins 76-74.

February 4, 06 St. Bernard-Primex02 nipped St. Pius00, 62-59 (Division 1)

In the second game, Tomwel Ortiz (#17) took charge for St. Bernard-Primex02, firing eight (6/8 free throws) of his 23 points in the final canto to power St. Bernard to a 62-59 win against St. Pius00.

January 21, 06 St. Lawrence92 tripped St. Bernardine95, 75-63 (Division 2)

St. Lawrence92 leaned on the heroics of #7 J. Taylans 20 points in addition to his offensive/defensive rebounds on both ends of the court and #19 G. Reyes timely shooting scattered 10 points all in the final quarter around the shaded lane to frustrate St. Bernardine95s offensive comeback, thus, sealing the team's Division 2 top spot.

Yes, you observed right! The teams on the left have defeated the teams on the right. They had exciting games placed on view in the basketball arena. Who will represent Lourdes School of Quezon City in the cross-over semifinals against Lourdes School of Mandaluyong?

Bring to mind; only one team will go down in the SOLGG -Basketball history books. Only one will hoist as champion by the vessel of victory the 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.

You guess is as good as mine!
Good luck teams!

Goodwill Games despite crisis.

Quezon City. The political instability did not matter as the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games Basketball continued and concluded the first Padre Pio Perpetual Cup Elimination Round.

The games last weekend were thrilling except for game one wherein St. Bonaventure85 lost by forfeit to St. Bernardine95. St. Bernardine95 (4-3) had a tune up game instead.

Though Game 2 had no bearing, it was a battle for pride in which St. Lawrence92 (7-0) ended the elimination round without any defeat a clean sweep. Playing coach #1 R. Aldover (he executed a cover your eye lay-up which scored 2-points) and #8 A. Almario share top scores for their team with 21 points while #5 P. Gochingco of St. Paul94 (0-7) had a personal high of 33 with #27 Catotocan adding 22 points.

It was a tight contests in Game 3 a seesaw battle and an exciting end game. St. Anthonys #4 R. Cabaluna top scored with 39 points and #6 M. Constantino chipped in a personal high of 24 while #14 Vadivieso top scored with 24, #1 M. Tamayo had 22 and #9 Palmero scored 20 for Team St. Thomas91.

St. Thomas91s #1 Tamayo tied the game at 94-all with 11 seconds left in the game. St. Anthony87 called a time out and fashioned a play for their go to guys, Cabaluna and Constantino. As the game commenced for the last 11 seconds, St. Thomas91 tightened their defense. It looks like the game is going into overtime however #71 M. Orbeta even as he was slicing the middle, St. Thomas91 anticipating a pass, their defense sagged on Cabaluna and Constantino, no man on Orbeta so the lane was open for Orbeta who converted the winning lay up shot, 96-94 final score.

The win sealed St. Anthony91s third (5-2) and St. Bernardine95s fourth (4-3) slots in the SOLGG Basketball Division 2.

Thanks Caloy!

The game which was suspended indefinitely will depend on the final outcome of all games in the elimination round this coming Saturday.

Unquestionably the said game will not be replayed but both teams will resume play by the time remaining (5:41) in the fourth quarter with scores 74-64 in favor of St. John'93.

Jojo

how about this scenario?

st. bonaventure85 and st. anthony87 win.. this scenario will bring st. bernardine95 and st. thomas91 into a tie at 3-4, while st. bonaventure85 will be at 2-4 with 1 game suspended indefinitely..

will the suspended game between st. bonaventure85 and st. john93 be replayed? this game might have a bearing in determining the 4th slot..

what's the committee's stand on this?

Family Day Games

After a week long break to observe the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes last February 11, SOLGG -Basketball moved on to the LSQC Grade School Gym to co-celebrate LSQC Family Day last Saturday.

An exhibition game between the LSQC Parents Council versus Team St. Peter82 was part of the program. It was past 12nn when the tip off started. The Parents showed control of the game, hitting the mark at the 3-point arc and constantly making points look easy under goal and inside the paint. St. Peter82, a team for the first time this year, was out of practice other than playing satisfactorily to have fun.

The Parents #93 Amoyo lead with 18 points, #6 Magrobang added 15 and three other teammates scored 10 points each. While St. Peter82 had #4 R. Cabaluna scoring a game high of 28 points, with #19 J. Angus and #40 Y. Vitangcol having 17 and 12 points a piece. The game eventually won by the Parents Council, 97-82.

Into the SOL Goodwill Games -Basketball -- St. Fidelis-Janphil97 stayed firm and settled with the #2 spot in Division 1 defeating win-less St. Gregory96, 91-74.

In the second game Team St. John93 was in the challenge for three (3) quarters ending the third quarter at 44-all. Nevertheless, St. Lawrence92 wanted the win more and outscored St. John93 28-17 fourth quarter points. The win was St. Lawrence92s sixth straight and remained #1 in the Division 2 elimination round.

It was Team St.Thomas91s first quarter 13-point advantage and played cautiously throughout the next quarters to eliminate the resilient St. Bonaventure85 95-90. The victory made the team stay alive for last two (2) spots in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, St. Dominic90 showed no mercy as it slaughtered a winless and undermanned St. Paul94, 119-58, securing themselves the #2 spot in Division 2.

St. Dominic90 set a team final goal output record by scoring 119 points. The team performance put Team St. Dominic90 into the record books for the highest score in a single game, exceeding Team SOL 1995s 114 points last January 21, 2006.

Quarterscores:
Game 20-16; 37-30; 64-52; 97-82
1st Game 25-21; 44-34; 64-59; 91-74
2nd Game 14-12; 28-26; 44-all; 72-61

Gentlemen:

It was unfortunate that such an untoward incident happened during our game (St. John'93 vs St. Bonaventure'85). A lot of variables occured before hand that led to that situation which I clearly remember, and I know that my colleague in batch '85 is also very much aware of. The act I did was more than a reaction to the many actions made against me and my team, rather than an intention to hurt anyone nor hinder the league's principles and objectives.

Despite of this, I fully realize that the action I took was clearly immature and uncalled for, and that I am whole-heartedly accepting all the equivalent consequences and penalties. I would also like to extend my apologies to the people who were directly and indirectly hurt because of all these misunderstandings, most especially to the organizers who were too hard-working to deserve all these headaches.

Rest assured that such an event will never happen again, as far as I am concerned and expect that I will continuously be a part of the league and support all the Alumni's endeavors.

Thank you.

A FIGHT-MARRED FIRST GAME AT A HALT

QUEZON CITY. Team St. Dominic90 now takes second place and handed down St. Bernardine95 its second straight defeat. St. Bernardine95 trailing by 10 in the first half, was able to cut down St. Dominic'90s lead to 1-point in the third quarter and appeared to have gained momentum before going into the final quarter. Quite the reverse, St. Dominic proved to have more spunk whipping team St. Bernardine95 by 10 and snatching win #4.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony87 extends its winning streak to 3 by crushing win-less St. Paul94 and surpassing the century mark, tying St. Bernard-Primex02's record high of 104. As a result, St. Anthony87 now wrestles third position with St. Bernardine95, the team they are scheduled to play with on February 4, Saturday.

In the final game, St. James89 grounded St. Pius00 to snatch its second win to grab solo third spot in Division 1. The tall and lanky Rivera brothers (#23 & #28) combined output of 50 plus another combined 31 points from #4 Ferreras and #45 Macaraeg totally outplayed St. Pius00 89-75, whose lead scorer #12 De Dios played for 30 points went for naught..

The first game was a typical exciting and very competitive one when an unexpected melee interrupted the game 5:41 minutes towards the end. St. John93 was leading 74-64 when guard #6 G. Ferreras and St. Bonaventure85s #18 G. Roa crashed into each other, resulting in an nearly in a fist fight between the two wherein #6 G. Ferreras surprisingly threw the a couple of wild & close punches.

Whilst cooler heads prevailed, infractions and violations were being conferred, and suddenly another altercation took place that included some players from the bench of Team St. Bonaventure85 who got themselves involved in the fight. The game was forced to end -- suspended indefinitely. Conversely, both Ferreras and Roa gentlemanly shook hands, courtesy of Chuck Dumlao'88.

Defiant actions, breach in code of conduct and excessive abusive language were some violations experienced by the SOLGG organizers in last Saturdays first game. Before this writing, the technical committee of the Padre Pio Perpetual Cup tournament held an urgent meeting to report and to discuss to the LSQC Alumni Association sanctioning the violators.

FOOD for THOUGHT:

Let us always be mindful that every game played will unite Lourdes School of Quezon City and Lourdes School of Mandaluyong together. May the true spirit of sportsmanship; camaraderie and brotherhood banish any feeling of pride or vain glory.

 Fr. Ed Tiamson, OFM Cap

SOLGG Basketball:  A Clash for Second Spot

QUEZON CITY Hopefuls for the fourth spot will be in a basketball combat; St.  Bonaventure85 presses forward from a win last Saturday while St. John93 is also seeking its 2nd win after a sorry loss against St. Anthony87.  St. Anthony87 riding high on a winning streak with two (2) straight will play against a winless St. Paul94.

While game 3 features teams with 3-1 cards St. Bernardine95 and St. Dominic90 whose team desires the 2nd solo spot?  Whereas, game 4 brings out a challenge of our Division 1s race for which team is vying 2nd spot or a lone 3rd placer.

ST. LAWRENCE92 riding solo in SOLGG Basketballs Division 2

QUEZON CITY Interestingly, Division 2 Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games basketball (SOLGG) last Saturday exhibited teams playing which sought after a win.

St. Dominic90, leading 16-points in the 1st quarter, never looked back, sailed all the way throughout the game and the win fastened the team a tie for 2nd spot in the team standings.  Despite the fact that #14 Valdiviesos scoring efforts burying nine (9) triples and ending a personal high of 28 points, St. Thomas91 played catch up and losing by 15 points.

St. Anthony87s #4 R. Cabaluna with the tournaments and personal high of 44 points while St. John93s combined 53 point output -- #24 L. Moya with 33 and #6 G. Ferreras having 20 pts lead their teams in scoring.  Cabaluna was fouled most of the time but sank 4 out of 8 free throws to protect his teams lead, whereas Moya, in an uneven shooting stance, muffed a three-point shot in the last four (4) seconds of the game.

St. Bonaventure85 wins by St. Paul94 forfeiture, 20-0.

FIBA BUZZER!
Official Basketball Rules p. 27
Art. 20 Game lost by forfeit
20.1 Rule
  • A team shall lose the game by forfeit if:
    • Fifteen (15) minutes after the scheduled starting time, the team is not present or is unable to field five (5) players ready to play.
20.2 Penalty
20.2.1 The game is awarded to the opponents and the score shall be twenty to zero (20 to 0). Furthermore, the forfeiting team shall receive zero (0) points in the classification.

Quarterscores:

BREAK AWAY GAMES @SOLGG -Basketball

QUEZON CITY Seeing that the Padre Pio Perpetual Cup Quarterfinal Round is virtually approaching, the games this Saturday, January 21 will be a classic.

It is going to be an interesting set of games, Lourdes School Athletic Alumni Association (LSAAA aka Triple "A") charter member George Escarraga said.

At this juncture, a team will take solo leadership, two-way tie for 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots and a team being at the tail end.

Teams will be classified according to their win-loss records, namely two (2) points for each game won, one (1) point for each game lost (including lost by default). If there are two teams with equal points, the result(s) of the game(s) between the two teams involved will be used to determine the teams placing.

Each point earned and even all team points scored are important.

St. Bernardine'95 ties No. 1 Spot in Division 2

QUEZON CITY St. Gregory96 came to play strong by thrusting a 14-point head start in the first quarter but St. Bernard-Primex02 cashed on their quickness in transition offense and tall lineup to snatch the Division 1 leadership with a solo 3-0 standing.

St. Bernard-Primex02s #10 Badillo with a personal high of 31 and #17 Ortiz with 21 points while three (3) others contributed in double figures hence a first, their team surpassed the century mark with 104.

St. Anthony87, led by #4 Cabaluna 10 of his 29 points in the final quarter, breached the win column by crushing St. Bonaventure85. For a moment in the 3rd quarter, St. Anthony87s confidence was noticeable by executing a 5-man substitution.

St. Bernardine95 captured its third consecutive win from St. Paul94. The win forged an identical 3-0 win-loss slate with team St. Lawrence92 in Division 2 top spot.

Quarterscores:
1st game 16-30; 53-49; 78-65; 104-83

QUEZON CITY. After a 2-Saturday break and all of the year end festivities, expect moving competing games when the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games Basketball (SOLGG) opens at the respective playing arena of Lourdes School Mandaluyong and Quezon City.

This Saturday SOLGG at QC, four (4) games are on a bang for the single round eliminations 1st Padre Pio Perpetual Cup. The team standings show that teams have long ways to go. In the division 2, there is a three-way tie for the lead spot and in no doubt one (1) of the teams will be the forerunner after the January 7 games.

After watching some fireworks display at The World Pyro Olympics that was held at The Esplanade (formerly Promenade), which is located right in front the SM Mall of Asia, inside the Bay City Central Business Park, in the City of Pasay before the end of 2005, (Whew! Allow me to breathe), let us see friendly games light up the start of SOLGG basketball in 2006.

QUEZON CITY It was the last day of scheduled games for SOLGG Basketball Padre Pio Perpetual Cup for the year 2005 here at LSQC Grade School Gym and most teams having played a game or two.

St. Bernardine95 came to play with an objective to win their first game. They played and defeated St. John93 despite the fact that Louie Moya #24 of St. John93 made a personal and season best of 36 points.

It was the opposite for St. Paul94; they were efficiently routed by St. Thomas91 in their first game. Again, St. Thomas91 scoring duo teammates #1 with 19 points while taking care of the shaded area both offensively and defensively and #14, who top scored with 21 points all coming from the 3-point area.

Team St. Anthony87 got grounded again after a two-point opening game defeat. Their team was scoring strong in the first and third quarters in the game and to some extent an anemic scoring in the third and final quarters whilst team St. Lawrence92 showed which team is tough on defense and effective in their offensive transition. The older Cabaluna #4 lead St. Anthony87 with a personal high of 31 points as Armand "Chestnut" Almario #8 of St. Lawrence92 with 26 points.

Six (6) men of St. James89 scored in double figures to crush the undermanned St. Gregory96 however a never say die St. Gregory96 turned in an offensive notch in the third quarter by shaving down St. James89s lead of 36 to 7 points. St. James89 called a time out very early in final quarter to put their defense in order and thwart St. Gregory96s resurging offense.

Quarterscores:
1st game 18-10; 36-26; 48-40; 77-66
2nd game 31-21; 47-42; 69-55; 83-68

QUEZON CITY At LSQC Grade School Gym the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games Basketball (SOLGG) provided a set of games unrehearsed on its second day of its tournament. A tight, fast-paced, intense game 3 between St. Bonaventure85 and St. Dominic90 was disrupted for about 15-minutes because misinterpretation of actions and reactions of some particular players almost headed for a brawl between teams.

However, the cooler heads were barking remarks, "Tigil na kayo! Parang hindi kayo naging estudyante ng Lourdes!" "Hey, kaya nga GOOWILL GAMES ito no! Paalala lang!"

As a result was benching of players concerned.

In the first half of play both teams were on even condition; Arroyo #32 of St. Gregory96 lead his team for a 10-point bubble before entering the final quarter. Then De Dios #12 of St. Pius00 took care of the scoring load of his team in the final quarter with 16 points. In the final minutes both teams were exchanging 1-point free throws at 65-all but the last minute actions were decided by the St. Pius taller men who dominated the offensive board that lured series of fouls for free throws that overtook St. Gregorys lead after 67-all.

The next game showed a different gusto in the tournament. Undermanned St. Thomas91 managed to snatch a win out of St. John93. St. Thomas91 teammates #1, who took care of the shaded area and #14, who produced 3-point bombs, paired in the second half to stretch their teams lead to as much as 12.

In the last game, the St. Bernard-Primex02 player accountable for the opening day first games ejection from the playing court was allowed to play but was reprimanded and paid a fine of P2,000.00. The penalty did not affect the teams win against St. Fidelis-Janphil97.

Special Announcement SOLGG cheers for LSQC Batch 97s Al Magpayos basketball comeback to the PBLs Team Montana. Kudos!!

Let me have a strong Resolve to Accept my faults and Amend my misgivings

Let me only See Your Goodness when everything fails

Let me Pick up my brethren when he falls

Let me be Victorious in my own strengths and not through the weaknesses of others

Let me be Youthful at Play, full of Wisdom in Thoughts and Honesty in my Heart

Let me Pray and Exalt Your name with all my might and soul in Sleep, Play and

        in Everything I Do.

Through these we Glorify Your Name.

Amen.

December 5, 2005

QUEZON CITY, December 3, 2005  It was a raining sunny Saturday afternoon here at the LSQC Grade School gym where we find our alumni basketball participants gathered and assembled for the opening of the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) Basketball Pre-Season Perpetual Cup Tournament.

They came to represent their respective batch, paraded around the playing arena and were introduced by the events master of ceremonies George Mercado70 DIVISION 1 - St. Bernard-Primex 2002, St. Pius 2000, St. Fidelis-Janphil 1997, St. Gregory 1996, St. James 1989 (reinforced by young blood); DIVISION 2 - St. Bernardine 1995, St. Paul 1994, St. John 1993, St. Lawrence 1992, St. Thomas 1991, St. Dominic 1990, St. Anthony 1987, St. Bonaventure 1985.

The teams march past the gymnasium in front of the events guests Rev. Fr. Cesar Acuin, OFM Cap Rector LSQC, Mr. Roehl Dumlao81, President LSQCAA, Mr. Raymund Mon Cabigao79, Executive Director LSQCAA, Mr. Alex de Vera69, President LSQC Parents' Council Inc., Ms. Teody G. Canave, former LSQC faculty.  What made the crowd applaud the most was Team St John 1993 paraded two (2) little muses walking alongside with their proud fathers.

After the Lupang Hinirang, there was a prayer and an inspiration speech from Fr. Cesar; the oath of sportsmanship was delivered by Mr. Mark Dumlao85 of Team St. Bonaventure 1995; and the tournament was officially opened by Mr. Roehl Dumlao81, President LSQCAAI.  Moreover, the alumni in attendance sang along the Lourdes Forever minus version produced by LSQC Batch 1982.  The ceremonial toss was completed by Fr. Cesar and witnessed by guest and friends.

The schedule of games were
1st game - St. James 1989 vs. St. Bernard-Primex 2002
2nd game - St. Anthony 1987 vs. St. Dominic 1990
3rd game - St. Bonaventure 1985 vs. St. Lawrence 1992

Throughout the event, most of audiences were connecting to the NBA stimulated background music that filled the gymnasium.  The alumni athletes, team representatives and the league organizers collaboration were noticeable.  Overall, the Lourdesian spirit has triumphed!  Mabuhay!

Meanwhile, looking towards the future allow me to quote this thought

Let us always be mindful that every game played will unite Lourdes School of Quezon City and Lourdes School of Mandaluyong together.  May the true spirit of sportsmanship; camaraderie and brotherhood banish any feeling of pride or vain glory.   Fr. Ed Tiamson, OFM Cap

The first game was very high-spirited between St. Bernard-Primex02 against St. James89 until a St. Bernard players ejection from the game after an altercation just beneath the goal during the first half of the game caused some downbeat tension.  Opening day jitters mixed with intensity or rush of the game? Maybe...  St. Bernard-Primex02 won 90-81

In the third game, St. Lawrence92 prevails 79-57, hence showed team dominance on the court against team St. Bonaventure85.

Quarter Scores:
1st game 27-21; 46-37; 67-58; 90-81
2nd game 18-14; 36-34; 57-53; 76-74
