QUEZON CITY. Although they were beaten twice in the eliminations
Team St. Bernardine'95 played to a great degree leading by as much as
6-points, Batch 1995 denied Team St. Dominic'90 its second SOLGG
championship by beating them, 83-79, last Saturday in the first Fr.
Francesco Fasani Cup Division 2 Finals at LSQC Elementary Gym.
Team St. Dominic'90 had a head-to-head match against St. Bernardine'95
with seven deadlocks, the last at 77-all with 49.2 ticks in the last
quarter and three lead changes, the very last at 44-45 in the third
quarter 3-minutes left. However, what took their game away was
their letdown to convert 20+ attempts at the charity line.
While both teams engaged in scorching fast breaks, sizzling perimeter
shootout and sweltering exchange of 3-point shots made, in the final
quarter when the opportunity presented itself, St. Bernardine'95's #8 GP
Valencia came through with important shots.
In the second game, tenacity won it for Team St. Fidelis'97. The
senior team glimpsed as St. Bernard'02's crumpled via an erroneous
inbound pass in the final seconds of their extra five-minute payoff
period that paved the way to a St. Fidelis'97 105-100 win capturing the
first championship.
Into the final quarter with 30 seconds left St. Bernard'02 up by two,
85-87, St. Fidelis'97 #1 Almario converted a 3-point shot to make it
88-87. A quick two points by St. Bernard'02 #10 R. Badillo, 88-89.
A muffed offensive by Team St. Fidelis'97, subsequently fouled St.
Bernard'02 #17 T. Ortiz-Luis who missed one of his free throws,
88-90.
A loose ball foul from St. Bernard'02 which stopped the clock at 8.2
seconds followed by a time out by St. Fidelis'97. After the time
out, St. Fidelis'97's #48 Al Magpayo missed his 3-point attempt but
team mate #13 Mendoza, one of the shortest player on the court was able
to convert a follow up shot to the send the game into overtime,
90-all.
_______________________________________________
The game stopped at the first minute because of a squabble between St.
Bernard'02's playing coach #2 A. Calaquian and St. Fidelis'97 #48 Al
Magpayo, wherein a double technical was called on the former thus
throwing himself out of the playing court.
While games were going on at 3:49 minutes left in the second quarter,
double fouls sparked a clash between St. Bernard'02 #14 J. Calaquian and
St. Fidelis'97 #24 C. de Guzman, after that #2 A. Calaquian surprisingly
was in the gym showed aggression headed for #24 C. de Guzman but cooler
heads intervened.

the rights and properties of our fellowman. Then learn to play the
game of life, as well as the game of athletics, according to the rules of
society. If you can take that and put it into practice in the community
in which you live, then, to me you have won the greatest championship."

Division 1 - Teams St. Bernard'02 vs. St. Fidelis=9197
By JOJO C. ANGUS

sports@lsqcaa.org
QUEZON CITY. Division 1 most valuable player candidate #18 Mico
Tirona fired up a game high of 35 points with #32 Mark Paul Arroyo
tallying 18 points as Team St. Fidelis'97 scored a down-the-wire 86-85
win over St. James'89, ensuring its first finals appearance in the 2006
Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup here at the
Lourdes School of Quezon City Elementary Gymnasium.
The game highlights were the two steals by St. Fidelis'87 in the final
minute of the game. The first, instigated by #1 Almario's pressure
defense on St. James'89 ball handler that pulled off a steal by #13
Mendoza; the second was another clean steal by#13 Mendoza, both resulted
in fastbreak points which helped the team snatch the lead at 86-83 and
eventually winning the game to get the first seat of the Division 1
finals.
In Game 2, Team St. Bernard'02 showed their mastery over the resilient
and tough-spirited team St. Pius'00 with an 83-76 hard fought victory.
St. Bernard'02's dynamic duo of #10 RayJohn Badillo and #17 Tomwel
Ortiz-Luis scored 26 and 20 points respectively in which Badillo exploded
with 12 of his teams 23 fourth quarter point output. St. Bernard'02
took seat number 2 of the Division 1 finals.
In the third game, St. Bernardine'95 came in prepared to play, executing
a 3 up to 4 men rotating to guard St. Anthony'87's perennial scorer #4
Rene Cabaluna. The defensive plan paid-off as they built a 22-point
lead while shackling Cabaluna who still managed to score 21 points
despite going scoreless in the final quarter. #23 Richard Martin
tallied 22 points to lead team St. Bernardine'95 to an 89-71 win,
shooting for the first seat of the Division 2
finals
It was cheerless to note that with less than 3 minutes left in final
quarter, there was a clash between #19 Silva of St. Bernardine'95 and #17
Abalayan of St. Anthony'87 and the latter was sent out of the playing
court for unsportsmanlike conduct keen on physical altercation.
In the final game, Team St. Dominc'90's tandem of #4 Jeff Aquino and #8
Gerald Cabaluna scored a total of 56 points to avenged their two losses
in the elimination round against St. Lawrence'92, winning convincingly,
90-79.
Team St. Lawrence'92 played catch-up during the whole 40 minutes of the
game witnessing their field goal attempts reached a notch higher than
field goals made while St. Dominic'90 played more than par, to seize the
second seat of the Division 2 finals.
The 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup Finals date is on December 23, 2006.
Jumpball starts around 4pm.

THE MVP Race
Most popular basketball leagues, like the NBA, require a
regular season MVP, where the award is given to the best player of
the whole season (including the regular season, the playoffs & the
Finals). The PBA, on the other hand, which features three tournaments (or
conferences) in a year, also gives the award to the best player of the
whole season, although a Best Player of the Conference award is
given to the most outstanding player for each of the conferences.
The Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games -Basketball bestows upon the best
performing alumni player on a specific team the Most Valuable Player
(MVP) award at the end of each conference -The Padre Pio Prepetual Cup
and the Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup.
During the Perpetual Cup, the SOLGG gave the MVP award to the most
outstanding player of the conference, selected from the championship
team, whilst the Most Valuable Player for the Fasani Cup shall be
selected based upon -
- 65% statistical points plainly field goals made
- 35% sportsmanship (50% code of ethics evaluation, 25% no. of games
played, 25% votes by MVP committee lead by SOLGG Commissioner)
Last Saturday's game:
In the first game, #4Jeff Aquino and #5Mark Herrera scored 24 and
21 points respectively to lead St. Dominic'90 to a 106-91 victory as they
handed St. Anthony'97 its second loss to grab the third spot.
#4Rene Cabaluna's 30 points, including eight 3-points shots, and #6Mark
Constantino's 20-point production unsuccessfully provided St. Anthony'87
the win for a second round elimination sweep.
After trailing by four in the first period, 23-27, St. Dominic'90
hurriedly operated a 27-15 run in the second quarter and a 32-23 third
period dash then exchanged field goals made in the fourth quarter to
finish-off the front running team St. Anthony'87.
In the third game, St. John'93 erected a 20-2 rush to end the first
quarter with a 26-7 commanding lead. After that, St. Lawrence'92
patiently crawled its way back into the game, setting off much needed
points in the last minutes of the final canto to snatch the victory from
St. John'93, 87-84, thus, St. Lawrence'92 solidified its hold of the
second spot. #8Chestnut Almario lead the winning team with 26
points.

Nio,
Thanks for email.
We will be coordinating with our counterpart at LSM. As soon as something is arranged and prepared, we will announce your said "friendly matches".
We have two divisions sa liga natin. For this conference, we opted to have every team play as many basketball games during the eliminations round. The more wins your team have the more your team qualifies for the semis.
Yes the luxury of having a "twice to beat" advantage applies to some basketball tournament like the one you mentioned. However, I will have to remind everyone that we adapted the FIBA rules for and during the semi-finals up to the finals -- games are played via knock out.

Jojo,
Just curious.... What happens after Dec 23? Will there be any invitational/meets with Mandaluyong teams similar to what transpired in the previous conference? We don't mind if SOLGG Final Four teams play friendly matches with LSM alumni. Pampapawis lang, win or lose.
Hard to tell at this point on the final four matchups. Our concern right now is trying to deal with the fact that we don't even have the luxury of a "twice to beat" advantage even if we end up as among the top 2 teams in the division. Parang US NCAA na itong league natin. Hehe.

QUEZON CITY. On a regular Saturday afternoon at the LSQC Grade
School Gymnasium, the Division 1's two round elimination of the
SOLGG -Basketball's first Francesco Fasani Cup just ended. Although
in the team standing, there was an equal finish St. Bernard'02 lodged on
top as the said team had a dominant goal average (quotient) opposed to
St. Fidelis'97.
The campaigners for the semifinal playoffs will be as follows -
St. Bernard'02 vs. St. Pius'00 (1 vs. 4)
St. Fidelis'97 vs. St. James'89 (2 vs. 3)
While in the Division 2, it has two remaining playing dates to
complete, and yet it is still too early to forecast who will be matching
against whom.
In case, you are inquisitive, peek at the team standings. St.
Anthony'87 is residing on the winning crest, on close second is St.
Lawrence'92, at shaky third place St. Bernardine'95 while St. Dominic'90
is in close proximity ranking fourth.
I have attached two files on the subject of how SOLGG -Basketball's
leading four teams per division carried out their games in the gruel some

UPSETS & RECORD BREAKERS @ SOLGG

sports@lsqcaa.org
QUEZON CITY. Team St. Bernardine'95 brought into play
their strong team effort to defeat St. John'93, 86-73. The victory
ranked them on top of the Division 2 team standings and over shadowed St.
John'93 Louie Moya's 45 points scoring effort.
In the second game, team St. Paul'94 led, 23-19, in the first quarter but
abruptly lost their shooting touch, making only 7 points in the second
quarter, eventually losing to team St. Anthony'87, 103-85. St. Paul'94
tried to make a come back but St. Anthony'87, after taking the lead early
in the second quarter, was already in a cruise mode and kept adding
cushion to its already big lead, 68-48, with still 8:19 minutes left in
the game.
St. Anthony'87's Rene Cabaluna scattered a new personal, team and
tournament high of 55 points, including 9 triples, eclipsing St.
Bernardine'95's John Dale Valeña's previous tournament record high of 53
points.
In a high scoring third game, Victor Queyquep and player #11 scored 42
points each to lead team St. Joseph'01 to a 119-109 victory over team St.
Fidelis'97. St. Joseph'01 was in command almost the entire game, leading
by as much as 13 points. With 6:02 left in the final quarter, St.
Fidelis'97 was able to tie the game at 99-all, however, St. Joseph'01
throttled a 7-0 blitz to take the lead, 106-99 with 4:14 left in the
game, then down shifted to protect their lead, snatching their second win
in four outings.
St. Fidelis'97 was led in scoring by former Welcoat standout Al Magpayo
with 41 points while teammate Mico Tirona shared 34 points.
In the final game, team St. Thomas'91 surprised first seeded team St.
Dominic'90 with a 91-88 upset. With approximately 5 minutes left and the
score tied at 78-all, came a multiple exchange of baskets and lead
changes between the two teams. Then, after tasting their last lead at
88-86 with 2:40 minutes left in the game, St. Dominic'90 went scoreless
while St. Thomas'91 managed to score a 5-0 run in the game's twilight
zone for the win.

NO WINLESS SQUAD

sports@lsqcaa.org
QUEZON CITY. Team St. Bonaventure'85 became the last SOLGG
division 2 team to win a game, surprising team St. Paul'94, 90-83. Vince
De Dios scored a personal and team high of 32 points while Edwin
Fernandez shared 21 points, including 3-triples in the fourth quarter, as
St. Bonaventure'85 finally won after losing its first four games.
After a slow start, De Dios collaborated with Gelo Roa in the third
quarter to lead an 11-2 splurge and put the game within reach, 42-44, as
St. Paul'94 went scoreless for more than 4 minutes.
Momentum was evident on St. Bonaventure'85, especially in the final
quarter, as they slowly pulled away from a 68-64 score, subsequently
leading by as much as 13, 81-68, with 3:20 minutes left.
In the first game, division 1 team St. James'89 also barged into the win
column via a convincing 80-70 victory over team St. Pius'00. Thomas
"Bo" Rivera jiggled a 28-point production and drew scoring
support from brothers Chito, Francis and BJ, who combined for 46 points.
After a 20-21 first quarter lead by team St. Thomas'91, team St.
Lawrence'92 went on to score an average 34 points per quarter to clobber
St. Thomas'91, 122-68. Joey Cura of St. Lawrence'92 top scored with
a personal high of 43 points while St. Thomas'91's Dado Santos scored 25
points.
In the final game, team St. Anthony'97 saw their four-game winning streak
end as team St. Bernardine'95 leaned on its team's speed and quickness to
snatch a 77-66 victory. St. Anthony'97's last taste of the lead of six
points was at 49-43 with 4:09 minutes left in the third quarter, followed
by subsequent lead changes against St. Bernardine'95. At minute 7:22 of
the final period, St. Anthony'97, already trailing by 9 points, took a
time out to stop St. Bernardine'95's thrust of blowing the game away.
Nevertheless, St. Bernardine'95 was able to protect its lead and register
its fourth win against one loss.

QUEZON CITY. Team St. Bernard'02, through their scoring duo
of Ray John Badillo and Tomuel Ortiz-Luis, outlasted team St. James'89 in
overtime, 106-105, to capture its fourth consecutive win in the 1st Fr.
Francesco Fasani Cup's Division 1 Elimination Round.
With approximately 11 seconds remaining in regulation period, St.
James'89's Thomas "Bo" Rivera made sure that he converted both
his free throws to tie the count at 95 all. Then in the next
play, St. Bernard'02 muffed two shots at the final buzzer sending the
game into overtime.
In extra time, St. James'89's chances of snatching its first win grew dim
as Bo Rivera fouled out with 1:10 remaining and St. Bernard'02 leading,
105-100. However, Chito Rivera took over and scored four quick unanswered
points to cut the lead, 105-104. At the other end, a defensive foul by
Archie Calaquian on Jess Ramos sent the latter to the line who split his
charities to tie the count for the last time at 105-all. Badillo scored
the last basket, 106-105 from the stripe after collecting a blocking foul
from Mike Concha who, in the dying 4.7 seconds, was able to put up a
decent final attempt but bounced out off the back rim.
St. Bernard'02's Ortiz-Luis finished with 31 points, including 6 points
in overtime, while Badillo had 28 points. Chito and Bo Rivera of team St.
James'89 ended the game with 32 and 29 points respectively.

OUTGUNNED AND OUTSCORED
by JOJO C. ANGUS

QUEZON CITY. In the absence of perennial team scoring leader John
Dale Valena, Richard Martin took charge and tallied a personal high of 38
points, inclusive of ten (10)* three-point shots made (5 converted
in each half), to lead team St. Bernardine'95 to a down-the-wire 95-94
thumping of team St. Paul'94.
St. Bernardine'95 was in command, 94-85, going into the final 2:00
minutes of the game, when St. Paul'94 made an astonishing comeback with a
9-1 run, putting the game within reach at 95-94. With approximately 6.5
ticks remaining, St. Paul'94's Arman Capili snatch the rebound off two
missed free throws by St. Bernardine'95, rushed straight past mid-court
then took a hurried shot beyond the three point arc but muffed the
attempt that might have won the game for his team. Marco Selga scored 31
points while Capili added 20 points in St. Paul'94's heartbreaking loss.
[*A new tournament record. The record was
previously held by St. Anthony'87 R. Cabaluna with eight (8) 3-point
shots last August 12 versus St. Thomas'91.]
In the second game, team St. Thomas'91 finally snapped its three-game
losing streak, outlasting team St. Bonaventure'85, 88-78.
Trailing by 18 points after the third quarter, 44-62, St. Bonaventure'85
outgunned St. Thomas'91 via a 16-4 splutter going into the final 6:33
minutes of the game, setting the score at 60-66. However, St.
Thomas'91 took a time-out to cut short St. Bonaventure'85's momentum then
retaliated with a series of 3-point bombs to pull away en route to its
first win in four
outings.
During the third game, team St. Bernard'02 took team St. Fidelis'97 by
surprise with an awesome display of speed and fire power to claim its
third straight victory with a convincing 103-84 win. St. Bernard'02,
starring point guard Rayjohn Badillo and center Tomuel Ortiz-Luis, didn't
waste time in building a commanding 60-34 advantage at halftime, then
showed an evident team effort to protect its lead cushion until the final
buzzer. Badillo top scored for St. Bernard'02 with 28 points, Ortiz-Luid
added 22 while five other players contributed in double figures. St.
Fidelis'97, who played minus their star player Al Magpayo, was led in
scoring by De Guzman and A. Martinez with 27 and 23 points
respectively.
In the final game, playing coach Sammy Tejada regrouped his teammates
after scoring leader Rene Cabaluna fouled out with less than a minute
left in the third quarter, reminding them to stay focus and keen on
playing tough against second seeded team St. Lawrence'92. Mark
Constantino responded by scattering a personal high of 36 points to help
team St. Anthony'87 beat team St. Lawrence'92, 93-72. The win pushed St.
Anthony'87 in the top spot of division 2 with a 4-0 win-loss
slate.

GAMES FULL OF PERSONAL HIGHS
by JOJO C. ANGUS

sports@lsqcaa.org
QUEZON CITY. At the helm, team St. Dominic'90's playing head
coach, Carlos Aquino, instructed his team mates to set a relentless
trapping defense going into the final 2 minutes of the first quarter,
then completed a 51-29 run in the next two quarters, to finish off team
St. John'93, 90-81.
St. John'93 managed to cut down St. Dominic'90's lead to 8 points, 78-86,
with 1:57 minutes left in regulation time but St. Dominic'90 fizzled out
the rally to capture its third straight win. Jeff Aquino top scored for
the winning team with a new personal high of 38 points while St.
John'93's L. Moya tallied a new personal high of 40 points and D. Carlos
shared 20 points.
In the second game, Victor Queyquep scored another personal high, 46
points, to lead team St. Joseph'01 to a 93-88 triumph over team St.
James'89. Trailing by 9 points after the first quarter, St. James'89
stirred-up a 28-10 scoring in the second quarter to end the half leading
by 9 points, 43-34. On the other hand, St. Joseph'01 adjusted on defense
and outscored St. James'89 by way of a 33-15 scuttle in the third canto,
then protected their lead to seize their first win in two outings. Thomas
Rivera scored 33 points for St. James'89, which has lost two straight
games.
In the third game, team St. Bernardine'95 improved its record to 2-1 via
a game forfeit after team St. Thomas'91 showed up with only four
players.
In the final game, team scoring leader Rene Cabaluna tallied 36 points to
lead St. Anthony'87 with a 91-78 mastery over team St. Bonaventure'85.
St. Anthony'87's playing coach, Sammy Tejada, did not play due to a
re-injury on his right shoulder but was very instrumental in charging his
team to its third straight victory in as many games with his proficient
instructions and timely shuffling of players. St. Bonaventure'85's Gelo
Roa totaled a new personal high of 31 points, inclusive of seven (7)
three-point shots converted all in the second half.

LACK OF PLAYERS SPELLED THE DIFFERENCE
by JOJO C. ANGUS
Email:
sports@lsqcaa.org
QUEZON CITY. Team St. Bernard'02 gets win no. 2 at the
expense of a new and undermanned team St. Joseph'01, 106-90. It was
a very tight contest from the start until St. Joseph'01's 3 players got
into foul trouble late in the third period, with 2 of its players fouling
out of the game. Taking advantage of the situation, St. Bernard'02
started to pull away in the fourth quarter for the victory. Ortiz
and Badillo led the winning team with 27 and 21 points respectively while
St. Joseph'01's Queyquep tallied a game high 40 points.
In the second game, team St. Paul'94 finally barged into the win column
by surprising 5th seeded team St. Thomas'91, 87-72. St. Paul'94 was
given two technical free throws before the toss-up as St. Thomas'91 was
not ready to play15 minutes after the scheduled game
time.
After a St. Paul'94 21-5 run in the first half, St. Thomas'91 was able to
make a comeback, taking the lead at 66-65, with 5:51 left in regulation
time. However, Team St. Paul'94 easily regained their composure,
grabbing the lead, 69-66, with 4:31 minutes left and held St. Thomas'91
scoreless in the final 3-minutes of the fourth quarter. Capili top scored
for St. Paul'94 with 23 points.
In the third game, Almario scored 19 points as 2nd seeded team St.
Lawrence'92 cruised to an 82-64 win against another understaffed team St.
Bonaventure'85. After an 18-all first quarter score, St. Lawrence'92
started to pull away and put the game out of reach early with two full
quarters left in the game.
In the final game, Team St. Fidelis'97 outlasted Team St. Pius'00, 88-78,
to grab its second straight victory. St. Pius'00 managed to pull a 10-3
run and took the lead for the first time, 35-33, with six minutes left in
the third quarter. Nevertheless, St. Fidelis'97 rushed back to
work, starring M. Chua, Martinez & Tirona with 10, 8 and 6 points
each all in the fourth quarter, thus frustrating St. Pius'00 bid for a
win. Arroyo led St. Fidelis'97's balanced scoring with 17
points.

A SPOILED PLAY COST THE GAME

QUEZON CITY. We resume our 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup here at the
Seraphic Hall's Gymnasium, Lourdes School of QC, where the Sons-of
Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG) -Basketball games are being held.
With the absence of their playing coach, Carlos Aquino, team St.
Dominic'90's assistant tacticians, Archie Calaquian and Sammy Tejada, did
some worthwhile instructions to seize a 103-101 win over team
St.Bernardine'95. G.Cabaluna top scored for the winning team with
33 points, despite struggling from the free throw line, hitting only 50%
of his attempts in the dying seconds of the final quarter. J.
Aquino added 23 points while W. Balmaceda chipped in 18 points, all
coming from the 3-point area.
Team St.Bernardine'95 missed a chance to either tie or win the game in
the final 6 seconds of regulation period when it failed to put up a
decent shot as a result of a bungled pass. It also frittered away
Valeña's personal game high of 53 points, which included his 28
second-quarter points outscoring St. Dominic90's 26 team points.
In the first game, team St. John'93 entered the win column via an 81-68
mastery over team St. Paul'94. It was a tightly contested first half
which ended at 38-all, but St. John'93 poured in 23 points in the third
period and tightened its defense, limiting St. Paul'94's scoring output
to only 10 points. There was no looking back from then on for St. John'93
with Moya & Carlos leading the team with 23 and 21 points
respectively.
In the second game, Team St. Anthony'87 defeated undermaned team St.
Thomas'91, 100-87, for its second straight victory. St. Thomas'91 was
consistently in the thick of the fight from the start and was able to tie
the game, 74-all, with 7:20 time left in the last canto. Then, St.
Anthony'87 made a 26-7 run and led by as much as nineteen points, 100-81,
with a minute left in the game. R. Cabaluna had 42 points while M.
Constantino added 18 points for the winning team. St. Thomas'91's M.
Tamayo tallied 23 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter with
less than 4 minutes left in the game.
Since the start of the 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup, we have been
witnessing serious beefing up of team line-ups with team St. Fidelis'97
being the grandest, so far, parading batch mate Al Magpayo in its first
outing. Magpayo, playing for PBA bound Welcoat Paintmasters, scored
9 points in St. Fidelis'97's 88-81 win against team St.
James'89.
St. James'89 trailed by as much as 13 points in the second quarter but
rallied to grabbed the lead, 58-57 then added four more points, 62-57,
forty-five seconds left in the third. However, St. Fidelis'87's
M.Tirona, in the ensuing plays, hit a 3-point trey and a medium range
shot to tie the score, 62-all, prior to the final quarter.

The scheduled games of the Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games (SOLGG)
- Basketball 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup last Saturday, August 5, 2006,
featured the quarterfinalists of last conference's SOLGG Basketball 1st
Padre Pio Perpetual Cup.
First game: Division 1 - St. Bernard'02 (1st) vs. St.
Pius'00 (4th)
Second game: Division 2 - St. Dominic'90 (2nd) vs.
St. Paul'94
Third game: Division 2 - St. Anthony'87 (3rd) vs. St.
John'93
Fourth game: Division 2 - St. Bernardine'95 (4th) vs. St.
Lawrence'92 (1st)
Team St. Pius'00 dominated the first three quarters of the game
but their big men fouled out one after the other minutes into the last
quarter. Taking advantage of the situation, team St. Bermard spurted a
26-15 scoring in the fourth period for an 81-70 victory.
After trailing, 14-16, in the first canto, last conference's division 2
champion, team St. Dominic'90, utilized all 14 players for its trapping
defense, subsequently outscoring team St. Paul'94, 44-23, in the second
& third quarters and protected their lead in the last period to
register their first win, 82-75.
In the third game, team St. John'93 rallied from an 11-point second
quarter deficit to take the lead twice, 60-59 & 63-62, in the third
quarter but experience and tenacity spelled the win for team St.
Anthony'87, 93-85.
Trailing by as much as eight points early in the first half, St.
Bernardine'95 speedily hustled in the third quarter, scoring a 26-15 run,
en route to a 91-88 victory over team St. Lawrence'92 who missed the
services of some of its key players.
Next SOLGG schedule will be on Saturday, August 12, 2006.

CLICK! TUNE IN to the 1st Fasani Cup Basketball Tourney!
By: Jojo C. Angus
Email: sports@lsqcaa.org
If you are a member of the SONS OF LOURDES GOODWILL GAMES -- or a serious ALUMNUS of Lourdes School -- you need to know this: There is definitely NO snooze time at the 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Basketball tune-up games!
There were colossal early showdowns that we enjoyed. Sitting at the commissioners box, watching the games, often a reaction for every good play comes along a nod for a perfect execution, a clap because of a good pass or assist, a shout in awe for a slam dunk, a very friendly ridicule towards the opponent (hindi trash talk), good laughter whenever a player/friend missed a lay-up; and other such reactions that make our day pleasurable plus the contentment every time a game ends with smiles and handshakes, win or lose.
During the games, most teams flaunted new players to their roster - a team added speed; another increased in height, thus, 4 towers; one team underwent a serious revamped in their line-up; last conferences runner- up will try another shot at the championship title and are in high spirits; the defending champions augmented their perimeter shooting and will try to go for back to back titles; plus, a new team which displayed mellowness each game they play.
The last two pre-conference seasons gave an impression that everyone, partaking in the games, is having a grand time; each one contributing in their own intangible way to support the alumni basketball league. Participating teams showed their unprecedented backing to the league by playing hoops and, most importantly, having fun.
The SOLGG-Basketball cordially invites you to watch and enjoy your alumni teams play basketball in the 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup (2nd Conference) which takes off this Saturday, August 5, 2006, 1:30pm at the LSQC Elementary Gym.

AN OFF-SEASON SERIES @SOLGG-BASKETBALL
By: Jojo C. Angus
Email: sports@lsqcaa.org
The Sons of Lourdes Goodwill Games ( SOLGG ) - Basketball 2nd Conference,
dubbed as The 1st Fr. Francesco Fasani Cup tune-up games
are over! This article is an assessment of the past games from June
04 to July 29, 2006.
Basketball is perhaps the most demanding of all sports. It's a game of
quickness: fast starts, sharp cuts and turns, running in acceleration
& deceleration and jumping. One's running includes sprinting up
and down the court on fast breaks, chasing players' cross-court, breaking
through picks, and scampering behind a series of screens to get a shot
off.
It was generally accepted that tune-up sessions were enough to condition
players for an upcoming competitive season. My observation: This isn't
true any more. Practice sessions are needed to fine-tune parts of
one's game, working on team offenses and defenses.
This personal initiative is missing through out the tune-up games - 1.
Coming to the basketball court 30 minutes before the game, to accommodate
one's activity below...
- a) Warm-up 5 to 10 minutes to increase
blood flow and lubricate the joints.
- b) Flexibility exercises to slowly
stretch muscles and tendons that cross and surround the joints.
- To prevent damage to yourself with stretching exercises, adhere to
the following pointers:
- 1. Stretching shouldn't be painful;
however, you should feel some mild tension or discomfort. Stop
immediately once you feel sharp pain.
- 2. Breathe naturally as you
stretch. Do not hold your breath. Stretching is an individual
exercise.
- 3. Don't compare your flexibility to
that of another teammate. Some are, by nature, more flexible than others.
- c) A cool-down period of 5 to 10
minutes after the exercise has finished letting the heart rate return to
normal and facilitate the return of blood from the extremities.
- d) Post-exercise flexibility exercises
of 5 to 10 minutes to prevent muscles from shortening.
If the player doesn't come in early for a personal warm-up session
to get into a certain basketball physical agility, there is good chances
that such player might be injured, dropped down a few stamina notches, or
take an initiative not to play at all with the team.
An off-season training for competitive team basketball requires
self-discipline, dedication, and sacrifice. During the tune up
games, a player finding time putting him into practice good training
principles will help him maintain a certain level of fitness. Therefore,
he can bring out the best of his athletic potential; even he is getting
bigger, wider in size & young at heart.
PAX!
